Cashmere vs Wool – Which is Warmer?

The debate between cashmere and wool is one of the most common questions in the luxury fiber world. Both are natural animal fibers with excellent insulating properties, but they differ significantly in fineness, weight, softness, and price. Understanding these differences helps buyers and consumers make informed decisions.

In terms of warmth, cashmere is significantly warmer than wool per unit weight. Cashmere fibers have a higher loft (fluffiness) and better insulation properties due to their fine diameter and natural crimp. A cashmere sweater can be up to 8 times warmer than a similarly weighted wool sweater.

Softness is where cashmere truly excels. With fineness as low as 14.5μm, cashmere is among the softest natural fibers known. Merino wool, the softest wool variety, typically ranges from 17-24μm. This difference is noticeable against the skin – cashmere feels luxurious and non-itchy, while some wool can feel scratchy.

Durability is where wool has an advantage. Wool fibers are generally stronger and more resilient than cashmere, making wool garments more resistant to pilling and abrasion. However, high-quality cashmere with long staple length (34-36mm+) from suppliers like Arbas Studios significantly reduces pilling issues.

Price is a major differentiator. Cashmere is considerably more expensive than wool due to the limited supply (each goat produces only 150-200g of usable fiber per year) and the labor-intensive collection and processing. Wool, being more abundant, is more affordable and accessible.

Sustainability considerations apply to both fibers. Arbas Studios is GCS and RWS certified for both cashmere and wool, ensuring responsible animal welfare and environmental practices. Both fibers are biodegradable and renewable, making them more sustainable than synthetic alternatives.

For brands and buyers, the choice depends on the target market and price point. Cashmere is ideal for luxury collections and premium positioning, while wool offers excellent quality at a more accessible price. Arbas Studios supplies both, with full OEM and private label services for each.
