How to Care for Your Cashmere Sweater

Proper care extends the life of your cashmere garments significantly. With the right washing, drying, and storage techniques, a quality cashmere sweater can last for decades while maintaining its softness, shape, and appearance.
Washing: Hand wash in cool water (30°C or below) with a gentle cashmere-specific detergent. Avoid regular laundry detergents as they can damage the delicate fibers. Gently agitate the water, soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Drying: Never wring or twist cashmere. Instead, gently press out excess water and lay the garment flat on a clean towel. Reshape while damp and allow to air dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Never hang cashmere, as this causes stretching.
Storage: Store cashmere folded, not hung. Use cedar balls or lavender sachets to repel moths. Avoid plastic bags – cashmere needs to breathe. For long-term storage, wrap in acid-free tissue paper and place in a breathable cotton bag.
Pilling: Some pilling is normal with cashmere, especially in the first few wears. Use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver to gently remove pills. Regular de-pilling actually strengthens the fibers and improves the garment's appearance over time.
Ironing: If needed, iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the garment. Steam is preferred over direct contact. Alternatively, hang the garment in a steamy bathroom to naturally release wrinkles.
Frequency: Cashmere doesn't need to be washed after every wear. Air it out between wears and wash only when necessary – typically every 3-5 wears. This preserves the natural oils in the fiber and extends the garment's life.
