How to Identify Pure Cashmere – A Buyer's Guide

With the growing popularity of cashmere, the market has seen an increase in counterfeit and blended products marketed as pure cashmere. For buyers, knowing how to verify cashmere authenticity is essential to protect your brand reputation and ensure customer satisfaction.

The touch test is the most immediate method. Pure cashmere feels exceptionally soft and smooth, with a slight slippery quality. It should feel warm to the touch almost immediately. If a fabric feels coarse, scratchy, or cool, it likely contains wool or synthetic fibers.

The burn test is a reliable laboratory method. Pure cashmere burns slowly and smells like burning hair (protein fiber). The ash is dark, crumbly, and easily crushed. Synthetic fibers melt, produce black smoke, and leave hard beads. Wool burns similarly but has a slightly different smell.

Price is a strong indicator. Genuine cashmere products cost significantly more than wool or synthetic alternatives. If a 'cashmere' sweater is priced similarly to wool products, it is likely blended or counterfeit. Pure cashmere raw material alone costs considerably more per kilogram than wool.

Certification verification is the most reliable method for buyers. Reputable suppliers like Arbas Studios provide GCS, RWS, and OEKO-TEX certifications that verify fiber content and origin. Always request test reports from independent laboratories such as SGS or Intertek.

Label inspection is also important. In most countries, textile labeling laws require accurate fiber content disclosure. Products labeled '100% Cashmere' must contain only cashmere fiber. Products with blends must disclose the exact percentages. However, labels alone are not sufficient – always verify with testing.

For wholesale buyers, establishing a relationship with a certified, traceable supplier is the best protection against counterfeit products. Arbas Studios provides full traceability from farm to finished product, with QR code verification on every shipment.
